We're not a painting company: we're a customer service company

Husband and wife duo Joel and Rebecca Turner knew they wanted to get into business ownership all their lives. When a previous family business didn't work out as planned, they decided to try their hand at franchise ownership. Find out how they came across franchising and WOW 1 DAY PAINTING, and why they ultimately felt this was the perfect opportunity for them (hint: it might have something to do with the title of this post!)

Q: What made you want to own a business?

Rebecca: I've always wanted to own my own business, and went to school for business management. Joel's parents owned a motorcycle business, and when the recession hit they decided to sell the business - so one year into our marriage we had to get "real jobs"... So over the past 15 years we've learned how to build a business through another business. I never knew what I wanted to own, and didn't think it would be painting...but here we are!

Joel: That's right. My parents sold the business because financially it wasn't working out. So we had to leave to work at other companies. After 15 years or so, we decided that instead of running a business for someone else, let us do it for ourselves.

Q: Why now - what was it that made you take the leap?

Joel: That's a really good question. I'd be lying if I said we weren't doubting ourselves at the beginning. We had a business coach who walked us through the stages of seeing the bigger picture. When he guided us towards looking at franchises, he showed us that we can push through anything -- even with COVID-19 -- there's still growth in franchising. That's how we were able to take a leap of faith and get through this. Even though the world has shut down, we knew there's a big opportunity out there.

Rebecca: The timing was great for me, I was ready to explore my options  and instead of trying to find another permanent job, Joel and I decided to see if we can do this together.

Q: In your opinion, what are the benefits of joining a franchise system?

Rebecca: I came from the franchising industry, so I was already pretty familiar with that world and had something to compare to. I knew I didn't have to reinvent the wheel, and that we could be more successful with franchising since we had all the support to get up and running. From my previous life, I had watched franchising work in a different industry, so I knew it was going to work for us.

Q: Why WOW 1 DAY PAINTING, what made this the right fit?

Joel: What really drove us to pick WOW 1 DAY PAINTING was the back end support. I've been in the customer service industry for a long time - something that really stuck in my brain was that WOW 1 DAY PAINTING isn't a painting company, it is a customer service company in the painting industry.

Rebecca: For me, it was the professionalism: the attention to detail during the entire interview process -- from the documents to the Discovery Days -- other brands just didn't have that. WOW 1 DAY PAINTING is a lot more selective when it comes to choosing their Franchise Partners, and we appreciated that.

Q: What are you most looking forward to about being a business owner?

Joel: One word: Freedom. To be able to build our own schedule and have the lifestyle that we've always wanted. We won't be tied down to a boss...because we will be our own bosses.

Rebecca: For me, it's about the financial return as well. We work really hard, and it's great to know that the more we put into it, the more we will earn for ourselves -- not for somebody else.

Q: What are your passions / interests / hobbies - what makes you happiest and motivates you?

Rebecca: I love to read. [laughs] Joel and I do everything together! My ideal day is laying out by the pool with our family. We love travelling.

Joel: I love to be out on the water, whether it's going to the beach, jet skiing, or surfing. We've always said that one of our first big goals out of this is to buy a boat so that we can get back in the water.

Q: Tell us about your territory, what makes it unique?

Rebecca: We're on the North side which is where the airport is located. That means lots of travellers: it's known for the beach so that's also a big draw. It's also a work city, with lots of commercial people compared to some places further south of Florida.

Joel: We live right on the cusp of the territory. Jacksonville is a military city that's very spread out. There's lots of room, meaning we're not locked into a small zip code area.
